This image was sketched, inked, and toned with Clip Studio Paint EX, with the heavy lifting for final linework being done at 300dpi or so using the Frenden "Ensabler" inking brush set to binary mode.

==Artist's Notes==
I went through a few different ideas for this one (including a chaster one I suspect may end up being Sadie Hawkins illustration material if I still think it's strong enough), and once again I ended up just sitting down at my tablet and doodling until interesting characters fell out. The droopy-eyed fellow with the cable plugs came first, and his companion -- who isn't intended to be Future Guy Fieri, although multiple people and myself have noticed the similarity -- was designed to be a suitably interesting contrast. It all started with Left Guy's flip-top head and evolved from there.

Driver updates always seem to happen at the worst possible time, so I figured that paired with some clearly underdressed subjects would tell enough of a story to carry the piece. At least they look like they're used to it.

I debated giving the man on the right tiger stripes on his undies; at reproduction size it'd risk not looking like much of anything, so instead he's just got some fancy briefs preserving his stool top from his nethers. His detached arm was partially for the sake of me drawing a torso I was happy with and then having to figure out where to put the rest of the limbs, though the more I worked on it the more natural it felt. I'm particularly happy with how his draped cables turned out.

While I couldn't tell you either character's names, Left Guy's cybernetics are mods on top of reconstructive surgery due to a car accident, hence his scar tissue. Right Guy has more of a general-purpose service model and had more of a say in whether or not he wanted a prosthetic.

==Summary:==
Nikolai Mikhailovich Kudryavtsev has played for the New York Rangers for five years when he's asked to take on more of a leadership role. Balancing more media attention with a secret gay relationship with a teammate is a challenge, to say the least. It becomes even more difficult when Nikolai finds out he and his boyfriend haven't been nearly as discreet as they thought, and some of the team already knows about them.

==Author's Notes:==
This story is 100% fictional, but like all fiction, it draws on aspects of the real world. The hockey teams mentioned (both Russian and American) all exist, but I have attempted to create all characters from scratch, because that was more fun. It meant I got to build my very own fictional hockey team without consulting the limitations of trade regulations, draft order, salary caps and real world nonsense like that.

This story deals with internalized and externalized homophobia in both Russian and American culture, and with the culture of prevalent homophobia that is all too prevalent in professional sports (including, and perhaps especially, NHL hockey). Some language is strong; some internalized narratives are deep-seated and damaging. In one scene, a teammate uses strong and painfully bigoted language against the protagonist.

This is still an S2B2 story, but it's hard to write a gay Russian hockey player who doesn't have emotional baggage, so I just tried to make things work out in the end. If you're interested in efforts to combat homophobia in professional sports, check out You Can Play and Hockey Is For Everyone.

While it does not come up in detail in this story, one character is on the asexuality spectrum. He would (if he were aware of the terminology, which he really is not) call himself demisexual rather than asexual, and is not "healed" by having sex with his partner. This may be addressed in more depth in future stories from his POV, or it may not: it has little bearing on this particular hockey boys story.

==Summary==
How does the New York Rangers PR department react to media rumors of impending player trades that are stressing out the team? Warring hashtags and a Junior Rangers fundraiser, of course. If Nicholas Larsson happens to take advantage of this effort to show his boyfriend that Kolya is safe around kids, well, that's no one's business but theirs.

If Nick happens to be particularly motivated to do this because of a really awkward dinner with Kolya's parents, well, that's no one's business but his own.

==Author's Notes:==
I highly recommend cooking borscht while wearing an apron. I also highly recommend cooking it, full stop. The first draft of this story involved a lot more cooking and was intended for the food issue, but I missed the deadline and it grew sideways and in directions I hadn't intended.

Note that this story deals with homophobia in both Russian and American culture. Some language is strong; some internalized narratives are deep-seated and damaging. This is still an S2B2 story, but it's hard to write a gay Russian hockey player who doesn't have emotional baggage, so I just tried to make things work out in the end, especially with regards to family dynamics and embedded cultural norms. Our narrator is on the asexuality spectrum. He would (if he were aware of the terminology, which he really is not) call himself demisexual rather than asexual, and is not "healed" by having sex. Please message me or comment if you're curious.
