There is a deleted scene, which was posted at http://7deadlysings.livejournal.com/1026.html.

In 25 Words Or Less
Body paint, UST, and boys in skirts. That is all.

Author's Notes
The song doesn't rhyme because it's not in English. Twenty points to your Hogwarts house if you figured that out by yourself.

This story is actually based (very very loosely) on an idea I had about seven years ago based on the song "Dancing Bear" by the Mamas and the Papas. Yes, you read that right. It started as fantasy gypsies and Wanderer was female. (This was before I got gay.) There are three distinct abandoned drafts on my laptop at the moment, and one restarted-halfway draft -- excluding the first, hetero draft from when I first wrote it.

I left Wanderer in a skirt because of something my dancer friend once told me about a dance he was choreographing in his head (to "All the Pretty Girls" by Kaleo, which is a great song in case anyone cares). The idea was something along the lines of one or two lead dancers and a bunch of backup boys in flowing skirts and pretty much nothing else, and on the line "they play naked in the water" the boys would all do handstands and the leads would run through the flowing skirts and it would be awesome. The image stuck in my head, and in a previous draft I was playing around with the language not having gendered versions of words like spouse and child and parent, so if I'm playing with gender anyways, the dancers would all wear skirts because they look prettier when you're dancing.

There is a deleted scene!!! It explains why Wanderer's name is Wanderer and not Dancer or something. There was this deadline thing happening, so I couldn't fit it in, and it kind of didn't match the tone of the final draft, but I posted it for anyone who's curious. There was going to be another scene after it where Wanderer came back a year later and was exactly the same but completely different and everything was good, but see previous comment re: this deadline thing.

Jesus fucking christ in a bear-proofed dumpster it is difficult to write long stretches of agonizing repetition. What do I even say.

Extra gargantuan thanks to the editors this time around, as well as my lovely beta, because by the time I finished this bloody thing it was well past the due date, let me just say.

I didn't actually get a chance for a full proofreading, so if there are any typos, feel free to leave me a disappointed comment telling me how terrible I am and how you're never going to read my stories again.
okay NOTE TO SELF: never name a character Alex ever again, because holy hell it is obnoxious to type up when you've never gotten the hang of the left shift button. Yeah. Hashtag typing problems.

Scotland Shenanigans is a direct sequel to Tent Shenanigans, my first contribution to Shousetsu Bang*Bang. (I actually had so much trouble with character development, like wow, because I wrote TS without actually having much character in mind, so most of the character in that was added in after the editors were like "by the way there isn't that much person here". SS was a matter of what I'm just now dubbing "fanfic character syndrome", wherein because you already know and love the characters, you assume everyone else will, which is bad writing and also discussed in ladysisyphus' great article on the topic. So. Thanks, editors, for kicking my ass again.)

I played around a bit with making Finn left-handed, but since I only mentioned it once, I figured it'd just confuse things, so I took any mention of right-hand-left-hand out so you can just pick a side. Because honestly, how many characters are actually canonically mentioned as being one or the other?

My beta made a comment on this story saying, "I just realized I have no idea what Alex looks like and I kind of love it." Why she loves it, I didn't bother to ask, but I didn't describe Alex intentionally so that he could look like anything, and because it wasn't important to the story. Finn's appearance was, likewise, fairly irrelevant, aside from his general prettiness and the fact that his hair always falls in his face. We don't need to know what colour his hair is, we don't need to know what colour his eyes are, we don't need to know the shape of his nose or his eyebrows or his eyes or his lips. What we need to know is what Alex sees and makes note of, and what Alex sees and makes note of is this: Finn is pretty. They've been friends for long enough that anything else is no longer noteworthy, and that to me is the most important distinction. I write what my character notices, and in this case, that's the fact that Finn is pretty and his hair keeps falling in his eyes. Alex doesn't notice the colour of his own hair (or eyes or skin) either, because it's always there and there's no point in the story where he'd make note of it.

This is an entirely self-indulgent piece of smut so if anyone else likes it that is just a happy coincidence.

As usual, thanks to my beta, Bird, and the editors for being awesome.

Loren and the Machine is the third story written and illustrated by Yuriko Toru. It ran in Special Issue 12 at http://s2b2.livejournal.com/353218.html, and is mirrored at http://www.shousetsubangbang.com/mirror/loren-and-the-machine/.

In 25 Words Or Less
Loren meets a mechanic who's a cyborg, and has to face her own unconscious racism, her brother's mortality, and her growing affections.

Author's Notes
The title started as a joke. (My working title was "Steampunk Cyborg Lesbians".)

I named Loren and Michal to be deliberate misspellings of Lauren and Michael, because I wanted their names to be common but unique. Max, I wanted to be easily assumed to be male, so I went with a male name.

Max's mechanical eye is not so much an accurate replacement as it is an augmentation, like Mad-Eye Moody's mad eye. The actual mechanism is a repurposed camera lens; it sees, but differently than a human eye, which is why she can close it -- to stop the cognitive dissonance -- and it's capable of taking digital photos at any time, as well as superimposing images from her computer over the world around her. The computerized parts of her brain work similarly; some of the programming replaces the damaged decision-making and personality circuits in her mind, and some of the programming does things like, say, capture and store digital photographs, or browse the internet.

The illustration was done entirely freehand, so no, it's not perfect. I'm not a digital artist by any means; the closest thing I have to a drawing program is MS Paint, which, as anyone knows, is almost entirely useless. (I say almost, because MS Paint Adventures remains a thing.) I had originally planned to illustrate Loren sitting at the coffee table with her head on her folded arms and Max sitting across from her, but I'm apparently best at drawing the same thing three or four times until I get it to look the way I want it, plus I'm very bad at drawing anatomy from memory and didn't have a model handy, so I did the title page and ran out of time to do anything else that wasn't ostensibly identical. Again, the whole thing was done by hand; the only digital part was the filter I slapped on it to even out the colours. I considered doing the title digitally, but couldn't get what I wanted.

I was originally aiming for a more steampunk universe, but the image I had already of Max (plus my lack of time) forced me to make it more modern-plus-tech. Steampunk tends to present itself in bronze and sepia colour palettes, but Max was very pewter-and-steel grey, so I had to colour the world to match, in a way. Basically, she would've been out of place in a properly steampunk world, so I made it more cyberpunk to better fit her and her shop, and Loren followed.

A Dragon is a model of land-and-air craft; a Cobra is a racing motorcycle-type thing, designed for speedy desert travel but used in big cities by the same assholes who, in our universe, take the mufflers off their bikes to compensate for their lack of redeeming personality traits. The idea to name essentially every vehicle model after appropriate animals was inspired by a combination of what modern vehicles follow that convention, Red vs. Blue, and the existence of the Vespa. (In this universe, a Chupacabra is a model of tractor, the Warthog is a Jeep-type vehicle designed for sand, and a Puma is a car similar to a Jaguar.)

A huge thanks to Bird for the thorough beta, and for kicking my ass when I was being a lazy, unmotivated asshat. Bonus thanks to the editors for putting up with my tardiness twice in a row, and for their kind comments. Also for being awesome.
okay NOTE TO SELF: never name a character Alex ever again, because holy hell it is obnoxious to type up when you've never gotten the hang of the left shift button.

Loren and the Machine is a story written and illustrated by Yuriko Toru.

A huge thanks to Bird for the thorough beta, and for kicking my ass when I was being a lazy, unmotivated asshat. Bonus thanks to the editors for putting up with my tardiness twice in a row, and for their kind comments. Also for being awesome.

There is a deleted scene, which was posted at http://7deadlysings.livejournal.com/1026.html.
