Nebulosity Çiélon has been drawing since she was little, with an unfortunate ten year lapse in practice between starting college for mechanical engineering and graduating. She recently got back into illustration in the fall of 2013 and dedicates an average of 30 hours a week to illustration, outside of her usual full-time job doing graphic design, user interface design and website design for a project management software company in Silicon Valley. Nebulosity is only formally trained in oil painting (two classes at university), but has taken to digital illustration with Photoshop & Illustrator, as well as Prismacolor markers and colored pencils. Currently she works primarily with mixed media, combining markers and colored pencils, and then fine-tuning her illustrations in Photoshop. You can follow her other illustrations on her online portfolio at Post-Apocalyptic Wanderer: The Artwork & Musings of Nebulosity Çiélon.

Nebulosity primarily illustrates for Aosora Hikaru (青空ヒカル), but is open to working with other SSBB authors if an opportunity presents itself.

Contributions
The machines around him buzzed and hummed, but he paid them no mind; he stared straight ahead at nothing, though even his expressionless face told its own story. He'd changed back into his civilian clothes, a shirt and slacks so expensive they looked cheap. His graphite-grey helmet lay on the table next to him, cracked up the left side, and a half-patched wound up his left cheek toward his ear told of where the helmet had been when it had suffered that damage. Alone, he waited, and he'd wait as long as he had to, impeccable and patient.

Usually I'm pretty coy about my story origins. This time, I'm going to be up-front about it: this entire story was inspired by this series of pictures of Chris Evans, and on beeblebabe's subsequent commentary about it:
Why are you wrapped in a blanky, Chris Evans? Is it cold in Cleveland? I don’t think it is because it’s August! Are you working through some emotional issues and needed your comfort item? Did Joss Whedon talk you through some heavy stuff and then gently wrap a blanket around your shoulders to make you feel better?
And thus was born the story before you, the alternate earth timeline where alternate earth Joss Whedon makes alternate earth Chris Evans fall in love with him while they work on an alternate earth Avengers movie.

beeblebabe -- who is responsible for so much of this, especially all of Brandon's great lines -- used the phrase 'Mad Magazine parody' to describe what's going on here, and that's about the long and the short of it. It's a very silly story, and it's supposed to be. I mean, really, if calling the team the 'Vengeancers' wasn't a tip-off to the general level of ridiculousness being attempted here, I don't know what to say. Sharp-eyed Whedon fans will also notice many tipped hats in various directions, because I won't pretend the man is perfect, but heavens to betsy do I love his work.

peripheralsight also deserves a large side dish of gratitude for being inspirational and supportive of this very stupid endeavor.

Not mentioned in the story: the following year, Josh will go on to make a Professor Terrible's Karaoke YouTube Channel II, where Noel will reprise the title role and Brandon will play Professor Terrible's new threat/love interest. Daanil didn't even look up from his paper. "Went well, hm." It was only a question by the most technical of definitions.

Author's Notes
I said this last issue, but it remains true here: as a rule, I hate high fantasy. Now, there's nothing wrong with the genre itself -- says the woman who has loved The Hobbit since I was five years old -- but to work, it needs to walk the thin line between the treacherous lands of What The Hell Is Happening and Please Stop Showing Off Your Worldbuilding Now. This, then, is my attempt at putting my money where my mouth is and taking that tightrope trip.

It's a little dopey and melodramatic, but it's not meant to be Great And Profound. My story last December was that; this was just meant to be fun. And it was! And all that matters is that I had a good time, right?

Originally, this was going to be for October. Then I realized there was no way I could get it done in two entries. Then I realized that I really should have a lot more here than there wound up being, but too many demands in real life kept me from making it as long as it should be, which is probably twice what it actually wound up being.

Things nobody will notice: this actually occurs in the same universe as Bright Mouths, only ~1000 years earlier. The Grey Islands become the Island, and Fard's city becomes the Mainland. If you caught what I was doing there, you'll catch vestiges of it here; if not, don't bother.

And speaking of its needing to be longer: my lovely artist (who did such fabulous work here) had the spectacular idea of doing an expanded version, with both more text and more art, and making bound copies/ebooks. So stay tuned! I promise it'll be worth it (i.e., it'll have more porn).

(from ladysisyphus.livejournal.com/829213.html)

That extended version is, for the record, still in the works.
Seven people on a spaceship go out looking for a long-lost colony vessel, and find it.

The light off the Kraken Mare shone warm and inviting, but Andreas knew that even if he'd been close enough to feel its reflection on his face, it wouldn't have been like the mornings of his childhood, standing at the edge of the Aegean Sea and letting the sunrise bake into his skin. Maybe this very light had cast itself over those same sparkling waters -- he could never quite keep track of Earth rotation without the computer's help -- but that would have been at best over an hour ago. By now, it was little more than a dream of sunlight, his sunlight. It shone and carried on into the black and left little of itself below.

Got a whole issue about underwater things? Let's write a whole story about space.

Of course, everything in this is a water hat-tip, right down to the name of the Yemanya, which was originally the Sirène, until I figured that was just to repetitious, considering the title. I went with the Cuban spelling of her name mostly because I thought it was pretty.

For the crew, you've got Andreas, Darya, Tengiz, Ione, Youko, Morgan, and Llyr. Cal is short for something; it's short for Calypso. Thel(xiepeia) and (Ag)Lao(phonos) are also named for various sirens; I might have gone for 'Peis', but Tsukizubon Saruko beat me to it. (Not that anyone would have noticed, but I would have noticed.)

The title itself is a nod to the Vonnegut novel The Sirens of Titan, though I haven't read it in a million billion years, so most connections between the two are coincidental. I almost co-titled it 'or, Saturn is Heaven!' for the Bradbury nod, but I didn't want to give away too much of the punchline for Martian Chronicles fans.

I've had this plotted out for a while, but watching Europa Report gave me the last aesthetic push I needed to finish it off. I feel sort of bad for setting it up like it's science fiction and then turning it into creepy ghostly alien space horror, but whatever, it's October. Folk should know better by now.

The only crew member who is not definitively associated with a dwarf nickname is Morgan, who would be (by process of elimination) Dopey, but I was proceeding on the assumption that they're actually the most-degreed person on board, and therefore it's more ironic than direct.

I defend myself from charges of Self-Lubricating Asshole Syndrome by pointing out that that's the least implausible thing that happens in this story.

Titan really does have seas! I'm not making that part up. The Kraken Mare is where most of this is set; like Titan's other seas, the Kraken Mare is made of liquid hydrocarbons, and you really don't want to breathe those. I've fudged some on the science, and setting this whole thing around the year 2300 (even with a projected hundred-year stall of human progress due to anthropogenic climate change) does give me some leeway with tech, but most everything is within some degree of scientific correctness. Blame any inconsistancies on the creepy telepathic alien psychopomp.

Final credit and much love go to The Winter Cynic, who responded to my slightly incoherent story pitch with enthusiasm and returned to me three gorgeous images. Andreas is modeled physically on Alexis Papas and Dimitris Alexandrou, who are two incredibly handsome dudes I had no idea existed before this, so I'm thrilled to know about them; Cal, on the other hand, is modeled after a whole bunch of classical statues of Ganymede, this one in particular. I love all three of the illustrations, but the last one really captures the kind of creepy, exhausted tenderness I was going for there, so I could not be a happier clam.

An eccentric twentieth-century history buff gets a surprise from his boyfriend.

At first, Paul didn't understand what was happening, so all he said when he looked up from his desk and saw Percy standing in the doorway was, "Don't forget to pick up paper towels if you're going out."

"Thank you for coming, Mr. Broderick," said Percy in a tone that was part business and part ice, and that was what made Paul really look, shoving his glasses up the bridge of his nose and marking his place in his new as-yet-unpromising biography of FDR with the flap of the dust jacket as he stared across the dim span of his study. The room was windowless, paneled with mahogany, and lined on all sides with bookshelves; a brass clock on the desk gave the time as 1:50, but it could have been early afternoon as easily as the middle of the night. The bulb of his desk lamp hit his eyes like a spotlight, illuminating the top of the desk and half-blinding him to everything beyond it. "Did the girl out front offer you coffee?"

A young woman visits a pond she used to play in as a child and discovers a fantastical creature within it.

She looked young, with long dark hair and uncovered breasts, and loops of what looked like blue and green silk floating around her without actually clothing her. She was suspended within the water perfectly, like a fish, neither fighting her weight nor her buoyancy, and she smiled at Emelie like she had a secret she was dying to share. She spread her arms, long and pale, glittering with strange jewelry, and make a beckoning gesture. Emelie could not see her legs.

Anecdote time: I wrote this in the winter a couple of years ago. One night from that time always stays with me. It was a Sunday. I’d spent all day working on this story and writing about people being scared. At about 8 o’clock I left the house to go visit my parents. It was December, so it was dark outside and it had been snowing heavily all day. Let me tell you, in the town I was living at the time, you’ll see very little life on the streets if it’s late on a Sunday and the roads are thick with snow. So there I was, all alone, walking down this still, white street, where the only sound was the soft crunching of the snow under my boots. And then, it must have turned 8pm, because I could hear the clock in the church striking the hour, which was weird because I lived really far away from the church. The streets were so empty that night that the sound just carried. It was spooky. I’ll admit it. Just me and the snow and the church bells tolling. And then. I turned the corner and saw a woman in a white coat standing silently at the end of the street. She wasn’t moving, just standing quite still. And I was already tense because of the church bells and the quiet of the snow and the spending all day writing scary stories. And I know that this lady must just have been waiting for a friend to pick her up in their car. But she was so still, and so quiet, and the distant church bells were droning on. Sweet Jesus, my heart was going at 100 miles an hour as I walked past her.

And that was it. I got to my parents house with no trouble.

I never did find out who she was.

Summary
Early Christian women fall in love with one another.

Translator's Notes

The author of The Passion of Saints Tryphaena and Tryphosa (part of a larger codex recently unearthed by Dr. Wm. Ford) identifies as 'Persis,' the third name listed with Tryphaena and Tryphosa in Romans 16:12. All three women are identified as leaders of the Roman church, though further biographies are absent elsewise from Christian writings. Nonetheless, St. Paul appeared to hold all three in high esteem, going so far as to identify them by context as διακονοι (diakonoi, deaconesses) who laborant/laboravit in Domino (labour/have laboured in the Lord).

The style used in the Passion lends credence to its unique authorial claims, as it bears little resemblence to later martyrdom accounts (see: The Passion of Saints Perpetua and Felicitas), choosing instead to focus its attention on the acts in life of the paired saints. In this, it bears more likeness to the apocryphal Acts of Paul and Thecla, which, despite the assertions its text makes, is a later forgery whose appearance coincides with the end of martyrdom accounts and the rise of hagiography. The author's intent appears to be to recount both life and death of her subjects, which lends credence to the text's claims that the author is an otherwise-uneducated, lower-class foreign woman in Roman society, for the mimesis the text evidence displays is interpretive, not verbatim (suggesting mimicry performed by someone who had possibly heard but never read similar accounts). The timeline does not follow precisely the dates suggested by other ancient texts, though precision of chronology was not a major concern of these authors.

The descriptions of sexual activity cannot, of course, be considered authentic, but must be understood as metaphorical, or perhaps a miscreant scribe's later addition to the text.

This story involves martyrdom, but like the early Christians, considers it a good thing.

Connections
The Passion of Saints Tryphaena and Tryphosa is involves characters mentioned in the Bible, and has a slight nod to Arizona Ford And The Golden Legend.

Author's Notes
My theory behind this was basically: hey, I've been exploiting all my friends and using everybody else's knowledge for evil! Maybe it's time to use my knowledge for evil! ...Except what I know is early Christian martyrdom texts. The translator's notes are very fake (I have implied that the codex was found by the hero of beeblebabe's ss*bb boy story), but they link to the real texts whose styles I'm trying to imitate here. If nothing else, I figure that'll let people know that this style is very intentional, and not just because I'm a bad writer.

I know I always say petronia's going to kick me out of the zine for this story, but this one may yet do it! Nah, it's not that bad, just really alienating. I won't be too surprised if no one reads it. FIRST-CENTURY PASTICHE, BITCHES! ...I may have to go lie down.
