The neck tattoo says, in Russian, "УМРИ" ("DIE", imperative). This is a real tattoo I've seen on a guy IRL; wishing I could have asked. I added some roses, because if one is going to be this dramatic, it's only natural to go all the way. The idea for this character is, "a gay Russian witch boy who has a difficult relationship with death". (His boyfriend - also in the picture - may or may not be a technomage psychopomp.)
Author's notes
The plot started out a long time ago as a fever dream during a chest cold from hell (I think there is still a scribble of main characters somewhere on y!gallery from back then). In the dream, the main character was the one doing investigative journalism, and ex was a full-time biathlonist.

Fast forward a few years, I was telling MYŌGADANI Mōra about several of my old origfic ideas, and this one came up again. Val, the angel that she is, told me to hold on to it :). The plot got reworked a bit to eliminate professional sports and include spies, and froze again at that.

Fast forward again, to December, when I thought, "what if the main character is Russian and the ex is English, and how does it all work to include spying and a bronchitis from hell?" And then it really started coming together. There were suddenly more characters. There were snippets, scribbles, two tracklists, and me being glued to the screen of my phone at all times when I wasn't working or sleeping (and sometimes instead of sleeping). It was, all in all, a fantastic ride, and I'm glad this story now exists outside my head. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Many thanks to V.B.B., my Foreign Journalism professor, for being generous with tales about his experiences in war zones, and generally about working as a correspondent in places of conflict. I have used the tiniest bit of your knowledge to Make Gay Happen, and I'm not sorry.

And, of course, my eternal gratitude is to MYŌGADANI Mōra, who is a wonderful friend and co-conspirator, who had been interested from the start, held my hand and listened to me moan about Sad Russian Cookie, who discussed ideas and offered corrections, read my WIPs and then the entirety of this monster pre-edits (!), and who is always the greatest inspiration to keep doing the thing. Thank you so much, darling! <3 You are the bestest.

"So I'm the stay-at-home wife desperate for adventures, then?" Teddy said

The movie they are referring to here is True Lies; the line Nick quotes, about only killing bad people, belongs to Arnold Schwarzenegger's spy character, and Teddy refers to the spy's wife played by Jaimie Lee Curtis. The whole thing is, in fact, somewhat hilariously awful, except for the absolutely awesome supporting cast.

The horrible rasping sound Nick's throat makes is a personal experience; it's caused by the vocal chords aligning a certain way to make a sound that is a bastard child of metal against glass and a moan. It might take one an embarrassingly long time to recognize where the awful racket is coming from, if one is completely out of it with fever.

Teddy ended up being unironically named after a snack. (In my defence, this particular food had never taken off in Russia, or possibly had never been imported). Um, it helps that he is a total cuddlebear? :)

General notes:

Historical note
The story takes place during Russian Civil War(November 1917 – October 1922), roughly in the Rostov region area, prior to the defeat of the White Armed Forces of South Russia in Ukraine in 1919. The geography is meant to be deliberately confusing – you might not find Ryabinovka on the map (or you might find way more than one village by that name), but Donskoe is real and was an outpost of Red Army at some point.

The term "Reds" refers to the supporters of the Red Army, fighting for the Bolshevik form of socialism. "Whites" means the various supporters and allies called the White Army, who supported, not always at the same time, capitalism, restoration of monarchy, or different forms of socialism.

To summarize the giant wiki article linked above, the Reds eventually won.

Translator's notes
Ataman – an elected leader in Cossack community; also, Cossack military leader.

Gorilka – (Ukrainian) a type of vodka; sometimes also stands for moonshine.

Lyutyj – the Commander's last name literally means “fierce, ferocious, cruel, heartless”.

Shinok – (Ukrainian) a village tavern; mostly offers drinks and sometimes simple food.

Tabor – Romani encampment.

Но рассвет подымет солнце, // И лучи его, как стрелы, // Остриями света разорвут ночную тьму. // Скинет ночь тумана сети, // День с улыбкой солнце встретит, // И поймешь, куда идти и доверять кому.

But the sun will rise, // and its rays, like arrows, // will pierce the darkness of the night. // The night will drop the veil of fog, // the day will meet the sun, smiling, // and you’ll understand where to go and who to trust.

Final verse of a Romani song Солнышко (Sun). The story uses the Russian translation of the original Romani text, which exists in several variations. One of them can be heard here.

Мне бы дьявола-коня да плеточку заветную, // И тогда искать меня в поле не советую!

Give me a devil of a horse and a trusty whip, // and I don’t advise you to look for me in the field, then!

Chorus from the song Мне бы дьявола-коня… (Give me a devil of a horse…). Music by Jan Frenkel, lyrics by Robert Rozhdestvensky. The iconic performance by a Romani actor and singer Vasili Vasiliev can be found here.
Summary
Disgraced magician-linguist Terrence is called back into service by an old flame, and has to confront the mistakes of his past and his own lingering feelings for Eli.

Author's notes
This is a story about forgiveness.

What happens after:

Somewhere down the road Terrence becomes Cass' teacher and it becomes his greatest legacy, that he trains this powerful, responsible, conscientious Linguist who chooses to use her powers for good. Terrence never speaks the Words much himself, except for when he and Eli get married (because Eli is totally the type who wants Terrence to make an honest man out of him). The day ends up stormy with rain, and Eli is so so sad that they might have to call their beautiful outdoor Jewish wedding ceremony off (he surfed Pinterest so long, guys!) So Terrence makes it sunny again. He thinks it's worth it when he sees Eli under the canopy glowing with happiness. Terrence figures if a little bit of sun is all it takes to make Eli that happy — which he mentions later that night, when he and Eli are lying in bed totally exhausted after crazy wedding night monkey sex, and Eli is like, god you're an idiot, it wasn't the sun, it was you.

(During their honeymoon, Terrence takes him to a basketball game).
