A young priest is sent down the Path of the Gods to investigate an attack on the Holy Temple. On his way there, he meets a charismatic stranger who has his own reasons for going to the Temple.

From delicious.com: "A bunch of bandits have stolen something and holed themselves up in the Temple, and it's up to a priest and a mysterious man from the city to remove them and recleanse the holy place. Also, the reconsecration ceremony was not quite as I'd expected. This is not a complaint."

A Night in Blue is a story written by Tamari Erin and illustrated by Cao Ku. It ran in Issue 8 at http://s2b2.livejournal.com/32718.html, and is mirrored at http://www.shousetsubangbang.com/mirror/a-night-in-blue/.

Connections
This is the first story in the A Night in Blue series.

Summary
After rescuing a mysterious boy from the predatory advances of his new Company, 2nd Lt. Simenon finds himself in more trouble than he expected.

Author's Notes
In the original outline, I had the characters actually mention by name the source of Darael's magic -- orgone. Basically, if you've read either the Invisibles or Casanova you know what it is. It's a crazy, made-up particle that id generated/emitted during sex acts. Whenever you have an orgasm, you release orgone, and that's what Darael feeds on. In the finished draft, it's only mentioned that he uses sex and lust and desire as fuel, and that when he uses his magic, he is surrounded by a faint blue light. (Orgone is supposed to glow blue.)

Darael's general look was slightly based on Ranewater Calder from Tite Kubo's Zombie Powder, an ancient, evil man who looks like a teenager and occasionally acts the victim to get what he wants. (Well, until Gamma cuts him in half.)

If he was in any other story, Simenon would totally be the uke. The only reason he's on top is because if Darael is on the bottom there's a better chance that the person he's sleeping with will get it off and give him what he needs.

Originally, Sir Nigellus was much more Batou-like, but after my illustrator sent me a preliminary sketch of him, where he looked like a crusty, anime-ish Sgt. Rock, I completely revised my opinion on the character and revamped him to how he is in the story. (The original Sir Nigellus would never have had Simenon alone with him in his tent for a smoke.) I'm glad I did, because I like this new one a *lot* better.

There was supposed to be much more discussion about the Furure and the atavist tribes (and I wish I'd included at least a brief description about them when they finally attack the camp). They were supposed to be sort of like the Reavers from Firefly, except also weird animal-like genetic mutations.

Half of me wants to write a sequel and half of me just balks at the idea because I don't think the end would work as it does if we do find out whether Simenon took Dara back or not.

(From http://dipping-sauce.livejournal.com/154711.html, written 2006-12-23)

Parting the Kimono
Aaron the Clanker is named after Aaron Stack, the Machine Man, best known from the Marvel comics series Nextwave by Warren Ellis and Stuart Immonen, where he is repeatedly referred to as 'Clanky' by the other characters.

If you haven't read Nextwave, you really should, and if you have we should be friends.

War Bonds is a story written by shukyou and illustrated by serenity_winner. It ran in Special Issue 7 and can be found at http://s2b2.livejournal.com/211655.html and http://www.shousetsubangbang.com/mirror/war-bonds/.

Summary
A woman whose husband has gone off to fight in WWII finds a friend in a fellow factory worker.

It was the war's fault that she was there, in dungarees and with all her wavy red hair tied back in a kerchief, her hands grubby in the crevices of her knuckles and palms, holding pneumatic tools she hadn't known had existed two weeks before, wearing a gold locket with Tom's picture in it the way his letters promised he kept what few pictures he had of her wedged in the crevices of the metal that held his bunk to the wall. The war was responsible for how the nails she'd always kept so nice were ragged at the tips and cuticles, and rimmed around and beneath with heavy black-brown grease; the war was why she came home to an empty house and cooked supper for one and jumped in the middle of the night at every unexplained noise and sometimes stayed awake until dawn, hugging Tom's pillow to her chest and telling herself it was going to be all right.

She wouldn't complain; she was a good girl who never complained. She just wanted God and the rest of the universe to be clear on the point of the matter of her suffering. She had done nothing wrong; it was the war.

Author's Notes
So once upon a time, during the great morass of misery that was last year, beeblebabe used the phrase 'WWII drag' to describe My Chemical Romance's The Ghost of You video. Through several subsequent steps and leaps of great nonsense, we came to this particular scenario. Credit as usual goes to her for helping bring a lot of this to life, especially the cuteness that is Patty. (She also came up with the title!)

There are lots of stories out there about housewives of this era trapped in awful marriages, and a lot of lesbian stories that pick up on that unhappiness and solve it with lady love. While many of these scenarios are both fun to read about and reflective of real-life situations, I wanted to do a story where the initial marriage is not only good, it's great! Therefore, the lesbianism isn't salvation, it's complication -- and one I didn't want to take the easy way out of by having Tom die nobly in war, leaving his widow in predictable need of comfort.

I feel all works out well in the end for all participants, though, including the children, who will grow up parented by a kind father, a doting mother, and a cool aunt.

It was a fun challenge trying to write a dirty sex scene with a narrator whose dirty word vocabulary is very small. Patty will love 'fuck' and 'clit' and 'cock' when she someday learns them, but for now, she makes do. ...Truth be told, Patty doesn't have a bunch of the words I feel would more correctly describe the intersections of race, gender, and sexuality going on around her, but she's a product of her time and place and upbringing. She's not going to realize that what she's in is a polyamorous relationship until she's old enough to collect Social Security.

Patty cries a lot in this story, and I'm only vaguely sorry. It was a really emotional time!

serenity_winner has gone above and beyond with these illustrations, I need to note, and if you're interested, you should hit her up for commissions, as her work is obviously spectacular. I tell you the truth, the second I knew I was going be doing this story, I knew she had to be the one to draw for it, because she draws the best fatties.

Speaking of fat hotties, Patty and Lou's character designs were inspired by April Flores and Dylan Ryan (and oh is this link NSFW like woah), respectively. If you are into fat, queer, gorgeous porn stars, April Flores is like a dream come true. (If Patty had been born c. 1985 rather than c. 1925, she might have enjoyed taking a similar trajectory with her life.) As a plus-sized lady who is a fan of other plus-sized ladies, I liked getting the opportunity to put a real big girl into the story and make her totally sexy; my only regret with choosing not to make Lou the narrator is that I didn't get to go on about how incredibly hot Patty is. But I think her actions spoke for that, and if that gorgeous pinup didn't convince you, perhaps nothing will.

Author's Notes
This was the first story illustrated by Nebulosity Çiélon, a dear friend whom I have known for roughly 14 years. We used to sit on her bedroom floor and draw picture after picture after picture. She may have even read some of my old fanfiction back then, though I'm not entirely sure I was willing to even show some to her, I was so embarrassed by my writing skill! (I don't think I've improved all that much; rather I just give less of a fuck now.)

I decided I needed to keep the momentum going, and wrote another story for this year's special issue.

Once again, the title is a Fall Out Boy lyric: this time, from the somewhat more obscure Homesick at Space Camp. (More obscure than Tastes Like You Only Sweeter's Thnks Fr Th Mmrs, anyway.)
Summary
Early Christian women fall in love with one another.

From eccentric-nucleus.tumblr.com: "do you want some biblical lesbians b/c here are some biblical lesbians."

From pinboard.in: "MARTYRED LESBIANS FOR CHRIST! WHAT A LESBIAN THREESOME WOULD LOOK LIKE AS A BIBLICAL CHRONICLE. ALTHOUGH TO WARN YOU, IT DOES END WITH EVERYONE ACTUALFAX GETTING MARTYRED."

Translator's Notes

The author of The Passion of Saints Tryphaena and Tryphosa (part of a larger codex recently unearthed by Dr. Wm. Ford) identifies as 'Persis,' the third name listed with Tryphaena and Tryphosa in Romans 16:12. All three women are identified as leaders of the Roman church, though further biographies are absent elsewise from Christian writings. Nonetheless, St. Paul appeared to hold all three in high esteem, going so far as to identify them by context as διακονοι (diakonoi, deaconesses) who laborant/laboravit in Domino (labour/have laboured in the Lord).

The style used in the Passion lends credence to its unique authorial claims, as it bears little resemblence to later martyrdom accounts (see: The Passion of Saints Perpetua and Felicitas), choosing instead to focus its attention on the acts in life of the paired saints. In this, it bears more likeness to the apocryphal Acts of Paul and Thecla, which, despite the assertions its text makes, is a later forgery whose appearance coincides with the end of martyrdom accounts and the rise of hagiography. The author's intent appears to be to recount both life and death of her subjects, which lends credence to the text's claims that the author is an otherwise-uneducated, lower-class foreign woman in Roman society, for the mimesis the text evidence displays is interpretive, not verbatim (suggesting mimicry performed by someone who had possibly heard but never read similar accounts). The timeline does not follow precisely the dates suggested by other ancient texts, though precision of chronology was not a major concern of these authors.

The descriptions of sexual activity cannot, of course, be considered authentic, but must be understood as metaphorical, or perhaps a miscreant scribe's later addition to the text.

This story involves martyrdom, but like the early Christians, considers it a good thing.

Connections
The Passion of Saints Tryphaena and Tryphosa is involves characters mentioned in the Bible, and has a slight nod to Arizona Ford And The Golden Legend.

Author's Notes
My theory behind this was basically: hey, I've been exploiting all my friends and using everybody else's knowledge for evil! Maybe it's time to use my knowledge for evil! ...Except what I know is early Christian martyrdom texts. The translator's notes are very fake (I have implied that the codex was found by the hero of beeblebabe's ss*bb boy story), but they link to the real texts whose styles I'm trying to imitate here. If nothing else, I figure that'll let people know that this style is very intentional, and not just because I'm a bad writer.

I know I always say petronia's going to kick me out of the zine for this story, but this one may yet do it! Nah, it's not that bad, just really alienating. I won't be too surprised if no one reads it. FIRST-CENTURY PASTICHE, BITCHES! ...I may have to go lie down.

The new wife of a king finds her attention increasingly drawn to a certain member of his harem.

A woman walked between the trees, dark-skinned and wrapped in airy blue cloth. It was a little hard to judge from this angle, but she looked extraordinarily tall — as tall as a man — with long arms and strong legs. Her hair was cut slave-short, but both her wrists and ankles were looped with gold. Her anklets had bells on them. Hannah could just make out a sparkle of their ring as the woman walked past them and ventured into where the man-made forest grew thicker.

From fairyninjas.wordpress.com: "A dirty tale of a drag queen/dom and his best friend, who is also usually a dom, but maybe not always."
"Do you know how to stop lipstick from getting all over your teeth, Lore?" he asked. I shook my head, never taking my lips from him.

"Purse your lips," he told me, before he slid his finger from my mouth with an obscene little pop. The red stained his skin and I swallowed hard, thinking of that color against his cock.

Authors Notes
This story was nothing more than an excuse to write a makeup/rough oral scene and while the story stops with that, the characters have spiraled out into a shared world, SEQ. Keep your eyes peeled for an appearance by Harper and Loren as well as Keith and Zachery from You said Yes as I said Please in Issue 50.

This story wouldn't have been possible without my partner allowing me to borrow her Ruby Woo. A huge thank you to my beta readers, including the one who stated "I barely know how to put on powder." Nor would it have been possible without the songs "I am Not a Robot" by Marina and the Diamonds and Pretty Little Head by Eliza Rickman.

Again, this story is dedicated in memory of Akane Arisu, who would be rolling her eyes so hard at what I chose to write about.

Bonus Scene
I wrote 2,500 words of this story from Harper's point of view and then I realized it was all wrong and had to go back and rewrite it from Loren's POV. Once I did that, everything clicked into place and it was done in about 24 hours. As a bonus here is a bit from the unbeta-ed or edited first draft.

Loren stopped me, hand warm against my thigh. "...Harper," he said, in the tone I'd come to learn was his 'I have something important to tell you' voice. "What would you do if I asked you to make sure my eye makeup would run?"

My brain scrambled and ended up settling on an image of Loren on his knees with mascara running down his cheeks. I almost dropped the brush in my hand as my cock decided to take interest in that thought as my brain started to connect that question to his previous statement.

"I'd ask why you wanted to look fuckable and have make up designed to make you look debauched after being fucked?" I said, looking down at him with narrowed eyes.

Loren swallowed hard. "...because maybe I'd like you to top the shit out of me and I like being hard femme, and you like seeing pretty people with their makeup messed up after sex."

And it was a good thing that I wasn't currently putting liner or mascara on him, or might have stabbed him in the eye from shock. To my knowledge, Loren had never subbed before. But my dick was telling me "YES" so I tilted his head up and met his eyes. "I'd maybe tell you yes, ask you what your limits where, what you wanted your safewords to be. And tell you to wait until I finished your eyeshadow before answering," I told him, as a fit of random inspiration struck and I set to work enhancing his fuckablity, but really, even without makeup the man was stunning.

"Same as when I'm in charge," Loren said with a little smirk as I pulled away from him. "Red. Yellow." He looked up and met my eyes and I kept letting my cock do the thinking.

"You are...an extremely aggressive top. Or, let's face it Loren, a sadistic fuck." I pointed out as if he was not aware of this fact himself.

"I know, and you are too," he didn't take his eyes off mine, and I licked my lips as I thought about the implication of those words.

"Fucking?" I asked, voice hot.

"Oral or anal only," he said calmly, like we were talking about nothing important.

I nodded and leaned over him, fingers unnecessarily tight on his jaw as I tilted his head. "Close your eyes," it was an order, not a request. Loren's eyes fluttered closed and I traced a thick black line around his lashline, flicking it out and filling in the wing before repeating it on the other side. "Keep them closed," I told him, and he did.

Never in my life did I find putting makeup on someone so erotic. As his liner dried, I traced his lips with a vivid red and slicked gloss over them, before reaching for a cheap mascara and ordering him to open his eyes, laying it on thick.

I sat aside the rest of the makeup, cupping my hand against his cheek, enjoying the look of his face made up for me. For me. I shook my head to try and clear it as I stroked his jaw.

Lips slightly parted, Loren glanced up at me, looking equal parts shy, nervous, and aroused. "Fucking hell, Loren," Between the "fuck me" red lips, long spiky eyelashes, and eyeliner winged sharp enough to cut, I wanted nothing more than to see him choke on my cock until his mascara was running down his cheeks and that perfect red was stained against my skin.

"I need you to tell me this is what you want again," I demanded, my voice rough, maybe a little shaky if I was being honest with myself. It was too late, or was it too early by now? I glanced at the clock, red numbers telling me it was just after 4am. We were running on caffeine and lingering adrenaline from my show.

I wasn't completely sure we should be doing this, if our lack of sleep wasn't impairing Loren's ability to consent properly.

He reached up, long fingers wrapping around my wrist and squeezing, thumb sweeping against my pulse point. "Harper," his voice had gone all soft in ways that I'd never heard it before, "there is no one I trust more to do this to me, with me," he corrected himself. "Please, I want this from you."

Part of me wanted to tell him that, no, we need to wait until we were both awake. Hell, Loren and I hadn't ever even fucked before. Unless co-topping someone counted, and I wasn't counting it right now. We flirted, we cuddled, we traded tips on using floggers and how to turn kitchen utensils into effective impact toys. We were friends. Very good friends who flirted and tied boys up together, but still friends.

It wasn't for lack of desire that Loren and I hadn't fucked. In part because I, in what was becoming a rapidly incorrect assumption, didn't see a way you could throw two sadistic tops into a bedroom and make it work. I just stared at Loren for a moment while I waited for my sluggish brain to catch up after I had let my dick do the thinking.

"I crave to be on my knees," he admitted, voice low. He seemed to realize that I needed more reassurance. "I've worked so fucking hard to be taken seriously as a dom that I haven't let myself feel this in a very long time," pale blue eyes met mine and almost took my breath away. "I trust you to look at me after this and still see me."

Loren kept stroking his fingers against my wrist and I batted his hand away because while my brain had caught up, my cock was still trying to do the thinking. His touch was too distracting in the mind vs penis war that was going on in my body.

Bless Your Heart is a story written by shukyou and illustrated by safelybeds. It ran in Special Issue 8 and can be found at http://s2b2.livejournal.com/244028.html and http://www.shousetsubangbang.com/mirror/bless-your-heart/.

Summary
The host of a YouTube show invites a journalist to be a guest star.

JULIA: It's just a little– Oh, shit.

[quick cut]

JULIA: And then you want to– Shit. Balls. Hold on.

[quick cut]

JULIA: But always– [offscreen crash] Oh, sweet Jesus, fuck me sideways.

[quick cut]

JULIA: Well, either these will be the best petit fours I've ever made, or I'm just going to have to kill everyone in the building to cover the evidence.

[musical cue, title card: "BLESS YOUR HEART"]

From isis.dreamwidth.org: "A gay newswoman (who bears a strong resemblance to Rachel Maddow) and a cheerfully profane Southern cooking web-series hostess flirt a lot (in front of the latter's cameraman husband) and eventually get drunk and get it on (ditto)."
From fail-fandomanon.dreamwidth.org: "A cooking webseries hostess (filmed by her husband) meets an attractive butch lesbian news show hostess to do a special episode."
Connections
Bless Your Heart is part of the Whitniverse and contains direct references to characters alluded to, if not named, in The Sad Blanket and And That's the News.

Author's Notes
Oh, mercy, where to begin.

Initially, I was planning to write a totally different story for this issue -- but I realized it was too long of a concept and I've been too short on time. However, on my lengthy commutes, I've been listening to John Hodgman's odd and lovely trilogy of complete world knowledge in audiobook form -- and in More Information Than You Requre, there's a whole long section where Hodgman and Rachel Maddow make cocktails out of increasingly horrifying elements. Thus, an idea was born.

I won't even pretend: Rebekah Yang is totally like unto Rachel Maddow, to the point where I actually spoofed the first paragraph of Maddow's Wikipedia entry to make Rebekah's. Julia and Jay are cribbed from much more personal sources, but you can rest assured, their inspirations are pleased.

beeblebabe deserves at least some collaborative credit on all my SSBB stories, but she deserves extra credit on this one: all of those cocktails from Rebekah's article are her own inventions. And they're awesome inventions! Even I, not the biggest fan of gin, can get behind a good Avada Colada. If you try them and like them, you should let her know!

The classics, however, are classics -- well, okay, the specifics of that kind of Gin Old Fashioned are from Esquire, but the Aviation and Fitzgerald are pretty standard. There was a cocktail I meant to include, but the story sort of wrote itself around its inclusion; thus, I might as well put it here. This, my friends, is how to make The Last Word: equal parts gin, lime juice, green Chartreuse, and maraschino liqueur; shake with ice and strain.

There are a ton of in-jokes in this one, too, and while I won't call attention to all of them, some definitely need highlighting. If you've read all the SSBB stories and assorted original nonsense from myself and my closest friends, you may notice, from time to time, a little overlap -- this is because we've got some intersecting creative universes and, being friends, we like to share. (Someday, someday we will make a table showing all relevant connections) One of the most frequently used collaborative spaces is the real world that's juuuust slightly off of normal, where veils are pretty hilariously thin. The whole concept of the Vengeancers first showed up in The Sad Blanket, and though he was not mentioned by name in the original story, Thom Markinswell (a.k.a. #1 on Julia Lee's Freebies List) plays the Trickster, the villain in both that movie and the Norseman movie that preceded it. Jim McGloin made his debut in And That's the News, and I can only assume he's still employed by Fox News to this day.

On the issue, too, of the phrase 'bless your heart': there seems to exist a misconception that assumes it is the equivalent to 'fuck you'. This is not entirely true -- it can mean 'fuck you', but only at its strongest. Used more mildly, it has connotations of 'oh, you sweet idiot'. Example: in high school, I had a boyfriend who was a freelance church organist in his spare time, and he once he was called to sub in at a church so far out in the sticks that he got lost at least a dozen times getting there; when he finally did arrive, half an hour late, he was frantic with apologies, and the old woman in charge of it all just took his hands in hers, looked him in the eye, and said, with all patient sweetness, "Well, bless your heart."

...Okay, that's the fun stuff, so if you're bored by things that are like unto navel-gazing, you can stop here.

I will admit that I had a little bit of a conceptual problem with this story, arising from the question of lesbian performance and the male gaze. While you can't tell about the article-writers, and of course the tweets and emails come from the ladies themselves, the man behind the camera is, in fact, a man.

The comfortable compromise I came to -- at least, the one that helps me sleep at night -- is that while Jay gets to enjoy the whole thing, it's definitely not for him. If he hadn't been there, it would've continued unabated. They aren't performing for him so much as they're performing for the camera in general. You could have replaced him with another woman or even a tripod, and the performative aspect wouldn't have changed. Exhibitionism is not automatically a bad thing! But a lot changes depending on whose terms it occurs.

One of the other things I decided to do, both mindful of this and for comic value, was to mute Jay. He's a part of what's going on, but he's barely participatory and he's definitely not driving. I hope you can put enough together about him from context clues, because he's supposed to be a super-great guy, and he and Julia love one another to pieces. But man, do you ever not pass up an opportunity like this one.

So! That's how my brain interprets it, anyway.

Muzzling Jay had one sad side effect, though: the lovely twitter drawing that safelybeds did for him never got used! So here he is, in all his twitter-sized glory. Ain't he just precious?

Daddy kink slathered in space nonsense and fetish Catholicism!
"Thought-Captain"? More like Thot-Captain, am I right??

This borrows from a lot of the ridiculous space opera I've read over the years (Star Wars, Dune, WH40K, the Jodoverse, etc). I had a lot of fun while writing this, and I hope you all enjoy it too.

The Virgin Incubus is a story written by juou no zan. It ran in Issue 70 at http://www.shousetsubangbang.com/mirror/the-virgin-incubus/.

Summary
An anxious incubus falls for his roommate, an asexual wizard.

Author's Notes
This story is set in the same universe as The Other Monster, though obviously in a different time (and place). So all of the horrible things I mentioned in those author's notes are true here, too, but this time they're in the story! You're welcome.

In my original outline for this story, I was worried about how on earth to make Hassan sympathetic, let alone likable. Hopefully, this concern now seems as silly to you as it does to me.

Cody's opinion on syllabus day is his own and does not reflect the views of the author. Syllabus day is great.

Hassan is not entirely correct about Egypt's trading partner Punt, please do not take this fictional college freshman's word as 100% correct. He has the sort of information one might have by reading about it several months earlier and forgetting most of the details, which was also method writing. I am nothing if not dedicated.

So is magic a force, or an energy, or a particle? I do not know and to some extent, I do not care. It's not important here, and I'm not a physicist so I don't know that I would make the best choice anyway.

At one point, Cody counts himself as neurotypical. He is, as at many other points of the story, fooling himself. To be fair, he is a baby and has no idea how little anxiety other people have.

Kev and his boyfriends originally played a larger role in the story, but then Cody turned out very anxious and not the kind of guy who would do those things. So we don't get to meet a vampire or a naga, which is probably for the best considering how much magic worldbuilding is already in this thing.

Speaking of cut scenes, here is a short list of scenes that didn't make it:
* a threesome (no Hassan so WHO CARES not me)
* phone sex (ditto)
* a very cute bursting into the room and interrupting a skype call and yelling "I love you" (which I just couldn't make work once I cut the other things rip)
* helping each other do homework, which was a cute idea but ended up scrapped bc I have no idea how to make "doing homework" interesting and honestly didn't care enough to try

Finally, the books Cody and/or Hassan explicitly talk about are Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond, and The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell. In case you were burning with curiosity about whether or not I made up some books. I didn't! ~Now you know~

I hope you enjoyed my story about an anxious incubus and his asexual wizard boyfriend. I sure enjoyed writing it.

Triptych is a standalone illustration by Someone Else. It ran in Issue 70 at http://www.shousetsubangbang.com/mirror/triptych/.

Author's Notes
These all take place on transit in major European cities.

The top one is on the Berlin U-Bahn on a DL type train. These trains have the classic U-Bahn pattern on the seats and faux wood walls see https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:DL-Zug_Berlin_Innenraum.JPG The example in wikimedia doesn't have the Brandenburger Tor anti-graffiti stickers on the windows, but currently running ones do (at least that I've seen).

The second one is on the Paris RER B line. The RER lines form part of the subway system in the downtown and are commuter lines running at ground level further out. Many of the trains in Paris, including the ones on the RER B line feature folding seats around the door area so that at peak times more people can fit standing in that area while more seats can be available off peak. This also makes some standing space for the illustrated couple.

The last one is on the London tube. The trains are strikingly round to fit in the tight circular tunnels that give the system its informal name. This shows in the illustration as the ceiling curves up above the couple's heads.

Aventurescence is a story written by Iron Eater. It ran in Issue 70 at http://www.shousetsubangbang.com/mirror/aventurescence/.

Summary
There's ghost trouble at a nearby trading post, so two nice young men Naar Rhoan head up to lend a hand. Along the way they meet some ghosts of a different kind.

"You weren't enriching people's lives. You were killing them, the mine, and the whole trading post. This isn't the right way."

It can be, though! You came! You listened! The others, they'd get close enough to hear but then run from me, even when I tried to be so still and quiet, but you! You touched me! You woke me up! Won't you help me help them?

The lantern's glow had always been reflected in Sarouth's jewelry, but now Riaag couldn't shake the feeling that something was subtly different about the light. It felt thicker, warmer, as though it was coagulating in the air like drying wax. "We help people by showing them how to thrive," he said, curtly. "I'm here to help you move on, not help you get whatever the fuck this was going again. You don't get to doom an entire stronghold because of a misunderstanding."

But you're like I am! You should know how it feels! If you could just be brave enough to walk away from His voice we could work together, we could spread the Void that's in me just the way it's in you—

Sarouth sloshed sacred oil in front of him in an arc and the voice whimpered. "Do not even start to compare yourself to me, you nihilistic piece of shit."

This story's main characters are not human.

Connections
This story is the sixth in the Rhoanish Works series. While the author recommends reading the stories in order of publication (in no small part due to increased writing ability and familiarity with the characters), it has been intentionally written so new readers can jump right in if they so desire.

The setting itself is very loosely based on the freeware game Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup.

Some background information for this story was developed during an "Orctober" art challenge, the results of which may be viewed on the creator's Tumblr. While the provided tag is work-safe, venturing outside of #orctober or #orctober-2017 may not be safe for the workplace.
Author's Notes
This year I learned that I absolutely need to set myself a word limit or, much like a slime mold, I will expand to fill the perceived space. I actually finished the first draft of this monster with sufficient time for Sparklebeard to read it; at 62,000+ words, I am eternally grateful for his swift and observant feedback, which among other things helped one scene better integrate into the narrative so it feels far less vestigial. About a quarter of its total length was written in a two-day period. I do not advise doing this if you have literally any other option.

My primary goal for this story was "the fellas go on vacation and talk out their relationship, also Riaag tries a new sex thing." This later expanded into taking a look at why Sarouth is just so incredibly bad at relationships, how he's changed as a person, and the growth he still has to do; the entire business with the haunted mine came very late in the game. I wanted there to be some context for readers who haven't necessarily committed the five(!) previous stories to heart to be able to care about these characters and get a feel for who they are.

I had a veritable laundry list of talking points to get through this year and I think I hit every single one. Previous stories have slowly shown Sarouth to be a more flawed man than a perfect divine being; establishing some of where he came from for the reader felt like an organic way to explain some of what ails him. Originally my notes suggested a slightly more cut-and-dry resolution to his trouble with his old band, but Riaag's approach of "fuck those people, honestly" felt much more true to the characters. I think it also makes the underlying message of self-forgiveness more powerful since it's established as something that isn't necessarily owed to people who've hurt you in the past, even if they thought it was for the right reasons.

We hadn't seen a "heretic" (by any other name) since The Stones' Earthen Grasp. Sticking one in the mine felt like a good reason for why things went so badly. Once I decided to include a mine in the story (probably inspired by listening to certain music too much) I had to figure out why it was haunted. "Dug too greedily and too deep" didn't feel right, so the heretic and their suicide cult, once I knew they were a thing, was a tidy solution.

Any named recipe that Riaag makes is based on actual Mongolian cooking techniques. Some adjustments needed to be made (they don't have potatoes, certain spices, etc.) but I think the results turned out pretty tasty! The Rhoanish dinner table takes from a wide variety of regions but I tend to go for steppe people first whenever I can.

The Leopard's Breath Company is, indeed, an adventuring party of sorts, and while it's correct to assume they mostly exist to set up future story threads I've wanted to have the fellas end up as somebody else's random encounter for ages now. Their questfinder got broken! That's very unfortunate. The group's name is taken from how supposedly the sweet breath of a leopard could put a dragon to sleep. Whether there are dragons in this setting, or if, like manticores, they're considered myths, is left as an exercise to the reader.

The objects depicted in the illustrations are, for Riaag, a saucepan, garlic, peppercorns, a whisk broom, and soap cakes; for Sarouth they are a wool-laden distaff and a drop spindle with thread. The design of Sarouth's staff has also changed again, presumably as a reflection of new materials he's found to better reflect who he is. The central disc is made from an agate slice with holes drilled all around the edges for support thongs, while the tusks are probably saber-tooth teeth. Readers of previous stories might note the significance of the latter.

Yes, that herringbone pattern from the title and end cards really does take forever, but it looks so nice, doesn't it?
Summary
There is no one who can get Kai quite as angry as Ayrien Gray. He's not sure what's worse, Ayrien's personality or the fact that all he has to do is walk into a room and Kai can't look away. Ayrien enjoys nothing more than riling people up. Bothering Kai in particular has become something of a bad habit...
This borrows from a lot of the ridiculous space opera I've read over the years (Star Wars, Dune, WH40K, the Jodoverse, etc). I laughed a lot while writing this, and I hope you all enjoy it too.

* a threesome (no Hassan so WHO CARES not me)
* phone sex (ditto)
