== Summary ==

Holly has been in love with Key since the first time that she met him in university. Years later, she's ready to stop hiding her feelings and make a move.

== Author's Notes ==

First off: no, Key is not named after the SHINee band member. If you don't know what I'm talking about, that's good. If you do...well, we have a common interest. When Key decided he wanted to go by another name, he shortened his wallet name to the syllable "Ki," but people kept pronouncing it "Kye," so he changed the spelling and decided he liked the way it looked. It's stuck ever since.

The idea for this story came from a dream. I don't remember it very well, but I think it involved two people doing Netflix and chill and then, you know, "chilling." I woke up and started telling my wife about it, and as the conversation continued I added more details, like that the characters had known each other for a while and one of them was a teacher. Then we came up with the names, and this story was up and running.

However, the most important thing you need to know is that Key's appearance and aura is perfectly captured by Shirota-san from Aggretsuko [https://aggretsuko.fandom.com/wiki/Shirota]. Yeah, you heard me correctly: Key's fursona would be a middle-aged polar bear. You're welcome.

== Summary ==

Hong has spent her entire life trying to avert the destiny a fortune teller foretold for her: to be a tiger's bride. But when her city comes under siege from a powerful magician, she must make a deal with a stranger in order to save it--even if it means having to face her destiny head on.

== Author's Notes ==

What a whopper of a story! I did not expect it to get this long, but I'm very happy with how it turned out. This story had quite a different plot when it was first conceived, but some things have remained constant: Young Do has always been a tiger, and Hong was always meant to be a foreign bride who finds her freedom on the mountain.

A few worldbuilding things of interest:

- Hong's name means "rose." If we're going to be honest, I'm not sure what Young Do's name means (it depends on whatever hanja you're using); I just like it as a name.

- The name for Sun Hue, the city that Hong is from, is a modification of a name for Hue, the old imperial capital of Viet Nam. Hue used to be known as Thuan Hue. A lot of Vietnamese can be written with Chinese characters because, well, imperialism. If you take the character for "Thuan" and transliterate it into Korean, it's "Sun." Therefore, Sun Hue. I wanted to evoke a more Southeast Asian feel for Sun Hue, hence their dominant mythical animal is the snake.

- Kinryeo's name is also a compound of Vietnamese and Korean words. The "kin" comes from Kinh, the name for ethnic Vietnamese. The "ryeo" comes from Goryeo, one of the old Korean kingdoms. Like its name, Kinryeo's culture and lands are a mixture of Vietnamese and Korean. The northern part of the country, where Young Do resides, has more Korean influence. That's why you see more people with Korean names (Da Bin, Hae Soo), and Hong wears a [https://frostwinter222.files.wordpress.com/2015/01/hanbok.jpg hanbok] after her bath. Young Do, if you're wondering, is wearing something similar to [https://i.pinimg.com/736x/54/59/d8/5459d8f3370196444c21999ca2f5ed59--scarlet-lee-joon.jpg this]. Except blue. And better looking.

- Dohoa itself takes its inspiration from an actual citadel in Viet Nam. You can read more about it [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C%E1%BB%95_Loa_Citadel here]. Dohoa is Young Do's seat of power. It didn't make it into the story, but Kinryeo is feudalistic in structure. There's a king way down in the south and great clans who help him rule over different parts of it. Oh, except for Young Do, who kind of refuses to bend the knee. Hence Yen's comment about Dohoa being "rather different than the rest of the country." Also why Young Do styles herself a "prince" rather than, say, just a lord.

- Finally, the magic: Hong practices sympathetic magic, while Young Do practices something more like elemental magic. I really love sympathetic magic and the poetry that can be evoked with it. It's a system that has room to be epic while still having rules by which it must exist.

The Potion Master’s Husband is a story written by [[green papaya]]. It originally ran in [[Issue 77]] at http://www.shousetsubangbang.com/mirror/.

== Summary ==

Klaus Xam wakes up expecting a peaceful summer day with his husband, Sylvester, only to receive a visit from a rude guest. Thankfully, his husband knows just how to apologize to him.

== Author's Notes ==

This story, like "Tiger Prince, Thorn Witch," is part of a larger universe. Klaus and Sylvester are actually side characters in the world of Crystallia; the main characters are their daughters, Bee and Odette, and their friends. But that's another story for another day.

I was very excited for this issue's theme because I love writing about homey, everyday magic. My favorite parts to write were the ones about the garden (I'm very proud of coming up with its concept) and the food. To my surprise (because stories have a life of their own), I also got to talk a little bit about being an immigrant/the child of immigrants. That's important to me because you rarely ever see that in a fantasy setting, particularly secondary worlds. When you look at secondary world fantasies like Harry Potter or Game of Thrones, the characters of color are either visiting from another country or, if they're second generation or more, their experiences are never explored. So, too often, these secondary worlds are a white daydream in which only white people were responsible for founding, building, and contributing to the formation of a country--something which is absolutely not true. Of course, even the idea of a nation state itself is troubling, but that's a lot to unpack in one short story.

And yes, in case it wasn't clear: Klaus and Sylvester are Asian (the closest parallel to our world's ethnicity is Vietnamese).
