This story is set in the same universe as [[The Other Monster]], though obviously in a different time (and place). So all of the horrible things I mentioned in those author's notes are true here, too, but this time they're in the story! You're welcome.

In my original outline for this story, I was worried about how on earth to make Hassan sympathetic, let alone likable. Hopefully, this concern now seems as silly to you as it does to me.

Cody's opinion on syllabus day is his own and does not reflect the views of the author. Syllabus day is great.

Hassan is not entirely correct about Egypt's trading partner Punt, please do not take this fictional college freshman's word as 100% correct. He has the sort of information one might have by reading about it several months earlier and forgetting most of the details, which was also ''method writing''. I am nothing if not dedicated.

So is magic a force, or an energy, or a particle? I do not know and to some extent, I do not care. It's not important here, and I'm not a physicist so I don't know that I would make the best choice anyway.

At one point, Cody counts himself as neurotypical. He is, as at many other points of the story, fooling himself. To be fair, he is a baby and has no idea how little anxiety other people have.

Kev and his boyfriends originally played a larger role in the story, but then Cody turned out very anxious and not the kind of guy who would do those things. So we don't get to meet a vampire or a naga, which is probably for the best considering how much magic worldbuilding is already in this thing.

Speaking of cut scenes, here is a short list of scenes that didn't make it:
* a threesome (no Hassan so WHO CARES not me)
* phone sex (ditto)
* a very cute bursting into the room and interrupting a skype call and yelling "I love you" (which I just couldn't make work once I cut the other things rip)
* helping each other do homework, which was a cute idea but ended up scrapped bc I have no idea how to make "doing homework" interesting and honestly didn't care enough to try

Finally, the books Cody and/or Hassan explicitly talk about are ''Guns, Germs, and Steel'' by Jared Diamond, and ''The Tipping Point'' by Malcolm Gladwell. In case you were burning with curiosity about whether or not I made up some books. I didn't! ~Now you know~

I hope you enjoyed my story about an anxious incubus and his asexual wizard boyfriend. I sure enjoyed writing it.

Most of this was written by hand in a tiny notebook while at work, backstage at a Christmas show, mere feet away from the child actors I was responsible for dressing. I'm a little surprised how little of the show I was working on ended up filtered in here. I guess it might help that the story was outlined and started back in the summer, and never was going to include any dramatic snowy monologues or big dance numbers.

I do not actually recommend hand writing 10,000 words over the course of two weeks in between your job duties.

You have my most reliable beta to thank if you were especially excited by how much focus there was on haircare as a form of intimacy. I definitely put that in to pander to her.

This story originally ran without author's notes, mostly because the author lost a fight to pointless anxiety.

This entire story basically sprung fully formed in my brain one day, shortly after I learned two of my exes were engaged. None of the characters in the story are exactly any one of us, but I took a lot of little details from one of the three of us for various characters. To my knowledge, the cuckolding thing is not one of them. That was just me being annoyed with how much bullshit evopysch masculinity weirdness was tied up in literally every cuckolding porn I had ever seen, when I can see the appeal of that kink, and I am pretty sure as a non-dude with zero tolerance for bullshit evopysch possessiveness, that is not actually the root of why some people think this is hot. And by pretty sure I mean certain, since there is at least one person in the world (me) for whom bullshit evopsych masculinity has nothing to do with it.

My point is: although my exes eventually broke off their engagement and their relationship, they are sort of immortalized here, by the weird porn their mutual ex wrote.

If you’re wondering where this story came from, all I can tell you is that I started scribbling furiously during a prison episode of Deep Space Nine that bears very little resemblance to this story, and wrote most of it on my breaks while working backstage on the tour of Motown. This also has very little bearing on this story.

So mostly, I guess, this story comes from a desire to see more prison sex stories with long discussions of consent, linguistic discussions, and tender, happy endings. Also people putting their fingers in each other’s mouths.

===Malachita Notes===

*in Malachita, pronouns can be left out of most sentences and phrases bc of the use of endings indicating person (did i crib this from spanish? yes. yes i did)
*pronunciation is pretty quick on the vowels, hence why Jaden often leaves them out in his reproductions of Malachita words
*conversely Malachita does not really have dipthongs--their vowels are monopthongs or (rarely) glides (y, w)
*Malachita also has more liquids than Bashad or even English, so there are some things that aren't being distinguished between here because the latin alphabet doesn't let me do that very easily haha
*word order in Malachita is p free, again bc of grammatical endings letting things be unambiguous--Chenillin's a smart dude and realizes that there is something going on there, so he uses very simple word order because he has no idea what the different word orders mean--he just knows Bashad does "subject verb object" most often, so he sticks with that unless he's straight up copying Jaden
*some sounds are overrepresented here because i was doing most of this on the fly without a chart, some are underrepresented bc i forgot Malachita had them
*anyway notable sounds Malchita does not have : th sounds, hard g except at the start of a word, shh
*Malachita words generally go consonant-vowel(-consonant-vowel-etc). can end with consonants or vowels, but can only start with consonants
*this is a LITTLE haphazard but i have been keeping a word list since like page three so it should be pretty consistent
*oh also vowels are pronounce the romance language way--you know, consistently, unlike in English, so: a -ah e-eh i-ee o-oh u-oooh
*Malachita also doesn't use tense the same way English (or apparently Bashad) does. Like it does not get marked, you figure it out from context, like in Chinese.
