== Summary ==
Colin's partner is coming for a visit after several weeks away, and he's hoping they'll be willing to fulfill an intense sexual fantasy he's been too nervous to discuss until now. When your big alien lover has huge sharp fangs, it's not weird to think about them biting you and injecting you with paralytic fear-venom, right?

....right????

{{Warning|Content Warning: No safeword|A character has his ability to use a safeword or otherwise revoke consent during moderately dangerous sex completely removed, for a time; although he agrees to it beforehand there's less discussion of the situation than would be safe or advisable.}}

== Author's Notes ==
The general idea for this story came to me while I was kayaking in the Puget Sound during a volunteer retreat for the sex ed org I work for, back in late summer 2017. A weird time to come up with a concept for a sex venom story, but somehow that's when it popped into my head. It percolated for about two and a half years and I'm glad I let the idea sit for that long; 2020 Mo has done a lot more writing than 2017 Mo had, and I wouldn't have been able to do the idea justice back then.

I purposefully left much of Zere's anatomy and overall look to the reader's imagination, but "six-armed, lavender, orchid mantis/borzoi hybrid" will get you most of the way to what I was envisioning. I'm honestly kind of sad the alien genitals I thought up didn't make it into the story; I wound up wanting the sex to be focused entirely on Colin. Sulka as a species don't have a concept of sex or gender beyond context they've picked up from dealing with humans, and even then it doesn't make a ton of sense to many of them; in the story I use they/them pronouns for Zere but their own language doesn't have gendered pronouns at all, of course.

An early draft of the story included more cultural context but it was bogging down the narrative so I removed it. At least I can elaborate here! Sulka evolved as predators who would ambush large prey and paralyze/pacify them with the venom in their bite. At some point there was a massive cultural shift away from violence and predation, related to but not a direct result of their earliest contact with off-world species, and many sulka chose to remove their venom sacs, either as infants or as young adults. Some families see this as going against their heritage and consider it a sign of "good breeding" and ancestral pride to retain one's venom, although even in these families few sulka ever use them other than in a coming-of-age ceremony in which they ritually subdue and consume prey. (In some areas, this tradition is so watered-down that a butchered and cooked animal, or an elaborate handcrafted doll, both symbolic of live prey, are "envenomated" by the rising adult.) Zere's family is one of these old-fashioned ones that insists on keeping their children "intact."

Fun fact: the title comes from ye olde horny poem "[https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/50721/the-vine The Vine]" by Robert Herrick.
Several months ago I had a brief conversation on twitter about what a Leverage episode centered around a strip club would look like, and the idea lay dormant in the back of my mind until just before this issue's deadline. While the setup here is obviously Leverage-influenced, Jules, Ellis, and Anthony are a bit younger than anyone on the Leverage team and don't have much high-tech equipment or an international reputation just yet. The three of them started working together when Jules hired Anthony and Ellis to help take down a group of landlords and city officials who were illegally evicting tenants from rent-controlled properties a couple years before this story takes place. No one had to strip for that job, much to everyone's relief.

Yes, the [http://www.mystrippercloset.com/raveware-lingerie-mens-black-trunks-stud-in-led-lights-bm905lu/ LED light-up underwear] is real. I did consider having this monstrosity show up in the story for real, as I figure Anthony could easily program it to say something more interesting, but alas it just didn't fit in anywhere.
== Summary ==
Nicola takes her girlfriend Girril out for a nice dinner, and she makes it a memorable night by wearing a ''very special'' outfit under her presentable outer layer. It turns out that public sex looks very different when you're a human dating an alien.

From http://fairyninjas.wordpress.com/2015/07/21/circus-maximus-ssbb-yes-and-3/: "An intriguing snapshot of an inter-species relationship with one human, and one alien of a sort that’s really turned on just by colors."

== Author's Notes ==
The original inspiration for this story was a throwaway mention of an alien who was sexually aroused by visual stimuli, specifically bright colors, in an unfinished Torchwood fanfic I read in 2005. Even though this was just a one-sentence reference that wasn't explored further, I was intrigued by the idea and have had it tucked in the back of my mind for a decade now; when I mentioned it on a panel about alien genitals & sex at Wiscon 2015 it rocketed back to the forefront again. I've always been frustrated that the author didn't expand on this concept and eventually I realized that if I want more weird alien smut in the world, the best thing to do is to make my own. The original concept for this story involved Nicola and Girril first getting together and would have included a lot more cultural notes as the reader learned them through Nicola's POV. While that quickly proved to be an uninspired plot, it meant I brainstormed a lot of detail that didn't make it into the final story.

[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51jB8YljliM Cuttlefish] were the major inspiration for Girril's coloration, although I gave the Ri a larger range of color and patterning options. They aren't otherwise directly related to any aquatic animal. The color response to sexual stimuli and other forms of excitement is an automatic reflex much of the time, but with concentration one can learn to control that reaction somewhat, similarly to how most people can learn greater control over their breathing with practice. There are also chemical methods to induce brighter coloration or deeper contrast; those might be used by romantic leads in movies or hawked on late night infomercials promising to bring that old radiance back to one's relationship.

When two (or more) Ri are in a sexual relationship, they rely more heavily on the feedback loop of seeing a partner's high-contrast arousal patterns and being aroused in turn than on colors and contrast in clothing. There are certainly lingerie stores that feature fashions reminiscent of an explosion in a Lisa Frank factory, but it's a bit of a niche market for people in Ri-only relationships; most of the customers are people in mixed-species relationships trying to find ways to entice a Ri partner. Ri are used to activating optical implants that filter visual stimuli down to a manageable level in mixed company, but as is briefly mentioned in the story, it's considered rude to force filtering in a one-on-one or small group setting as minor visual cues can be harder to make out with filters activated. So while a human in bright party clothes at a dance club with Ri patrons isn't being inappropriate at all, they'd raise some eyebrows wearing those same clothes to board game night at a Ri friend's house.

Ambient bright or high-contract colors aren't generally arousing on their own; if Girril sees a brightly-colored abstract painting in an art gallery, she's not going to have an arousal response, and the Ri district isn't entirely monochromatic. This can vary from person to person, though, and if an image is intense enough it might have sexual or sensual associations, although it is unlikely to be considered obscene on its own. For sexually inexperienced or younger Ri, something as intense as a Magic Eye image would probably be passed around like an old Playboy.
