This story was my first time tackling something so big and I feel like it helped me grow and become a better writer. I love it, I love its characters, I'm proud that I managed to finish it in time, and that it is my first contribution to Shousetsu Bang*Bang (the first of many, I hope). I'm grateful to it for being with me through a difficult time of my life. But most of all I'm grateful to my friends, without whose emotional support I couldn't have written all this. Among them, I feel like I owe a special thanks to my trusted beta, El, who managed to work her magic in a very narrow time frame.

Backroads is a story written by NTH that ran in Issue 82 at http://www.shousetsubangbang.com/mirror/backroads/

Summary

Content Warning: Underage, Violence, Gore, Abuse

The author wishes to note that this story contains some sensitive material, particularly: a (slightly) underage character, allusions to parental abuse, depictions of graphic violence, gore, and death, and significant psychological manipulation described from the POV of an unreliable narrator.

Everyone in their teens has thought, even just once, about running away from home. Miklós, a teenager born and raised in a small village in the Slovenian countryside, is no different. But no matter how much he hates his town, how he feels out of place, how ugly his relationship with his parents is, he has no way to turn that thought into reality. That is until he gets picked up by the mysterious Alexej, who seems to be unexplainably interested in him.

Miklós knew next to nothing about borders, and even less about crossing one. The idea he could leave Slovenia had never even passed through his mind before Alexej had mentioned it, and now it sat on his shoulder, the alien thing, and it whispered into his ears dreams he didn’t understand.

This story has inspired a Spotify playlist, to which the author recommends listening. Especially Schumann's "Traumerei", the first track of said playlist, can be considered the story's theme song.

Author's Notes

When I started writing this story, I didn't even know about Shousetsu Bang*Bang yet. It was supposed to be a short, self-indulgent story. I managed to stay faithful to fifty per cent of that idea.

I really enjoyed writing a road trip story, and especially doing so in a European setting. I love describing sceneries immersed in nature, telling about feelings of solitude and alienation, and I think it shows almost too much in this story. Miklós was a pleasure to write in all his many flaws and qualities, but most of all because of his naivete. Alexej, on the other hand, is my favourite type of character to write, and I almost feel like I'm not ready to let him go.
