Author's Notes

This story is set on the Texas Gulf Coast in 1955, so pardon the period-appropriate binary (yet fluid!) notions of gender at play. The Golden Spoke is based on a real bar during that time period, the Wagon Wheel, though several liberties have been taken with geography.

Funny thing about the "Mr." title: A lot of states, Texas included, had cross-dressing statutes that did not look kindly on drag, period, but absolutely wouldn't stand the idea that it might be used for deception. A lot of "female impersonators" (as they were known) of the time worked under identifiably male names or overt pseudonyms, but those who chose to use female stage names would often bill themselves as "Mr. [Female Name]" so they could claim they were obeying the letter of the law, if not the spirit. Even though Houston's cross-dressing ordinance was overturned in 1972, one of the big local drag names of the '70s was billed as Mr. Tiffany Jones as an homage to this historical fact.
