Despite everything, this is not an autobiographical story.
It started out that way, to be sure. I mean ... look, I'm going to turn forty in two months. I started this thinking I was going to work my way through some anxieties. However, as I wrote, I realized that these were actually anxieties from five-years-ago me, and I'm in a very different place now.  So maybe we'll consider this an exorcism of the ghosts of some older thoughts. (Don't worry, I've got plenty of other stuff to be anxious about now!)
The germ of this story was the thought "lady Erlking," and then it rambled on from there. Weird genderfucky themes are not unintentional.
Kára [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K%C3%A1ra | is indeed a valkyrie from one of the Poetic Eddas], though I picked her name because it was the least obviously Old Norse and I didn't quite want to give away the game when she showed up. I mean, come on, you meant a lady named Brynhildr or Hlaðguðr svanhvít, you know what's up.
The whole story takes place in and around Philadelphia. SEPTA pride, I guess?

Summary

A woman nearing her fortieth birthday starts having a recurring dream.

In the dream, she’s always running.

Author's Notes

Kára | is indeed a valkyrie from one of the Poetic Eddas, though I picked her name because it was the least obviously Old Norse and I didn't quite want to give away the game when she showed up. I mean, come on, you meant a lady named Brynhildr or Hlaðguðr svanhvít, you know what's up.

The whole story takes place in and around Philadelphia. SEPTA pride, I guess?
